Bengaluru's August 2026 EV Registrations Reach 13,389: Electric Vehicles Take 17.5% of New Registrations and 50.3% of Karnataka's Total

Bengaluru registered 13,389 electric vehicles in August 2026, which is 17.5% of the 76,508 new vehicles registered in the city that month, or roughly 1 in every 6. The city accounted for 50.3% of the 26,636 EVs registered across Karnataka in August. Electric two-wheelers made up about 71% of Bengaluru's EV registrations (9,453 units), and electric cars added 1,258 units. These figures come from Karnataka transport department data reported by The Times of India, and they cover Bengaluru only, not the whole state.

Bengaluru's August 2026 EV Registrations at a Glance

The city added 76,508 new vehicles in August, and 13,389 of them were electric. That leaves 63,119 non-electric registrations, so EVs are now a clear double-digit slice of what Bengaluru buys each month.

The reported data does not include a July 2026 Bengaluru figure, so we can't say whether August was up or down month on month. We have avoided stating a trend the numbers don't support.

Electric Two-Wheelers vs Electric Cars: The Split

Two-wheelers do the heavy lifting. Of the 13,389 EVs registered, 9,453 were electric two-wheelers (about 71%) and 1,258 were electric cars (about 9%).

The reports do not break the remaining 2,678 registrations down further. They would include vehicles such as three-wheelers, cabs and buses, but we can't confirm the exact mix from the published figures.

On the car side, these registrations came after Karnataka introduced a lifetime road tax on electric four-wheelers from 1 April 2026, while electric two-wheelers stayed exempt. The reported August data does not measure how that tax affected car demand, so we are noting the timing, not drawing a cause.

Bengaluru's Total EV Fleet as of 30 August

Beyond monthly registrations, the city's cumulative EV fleet stood at more than 4.9 lakh vehicles, against nearly 8.9 lakh across Karnataka. That gives Bengaluru around 56% of the state's EV fleet, as reported.

Karnataka's overall fleet includes around 7.3 lakh electric two-wheelers and 65,915 electric cars. Statewide, EV registrations grew from 7,155 in 2019-20 to around 2.3 lakh in 2025-26, more than 32 times the earlier level.

How Bengaluru Compares With Karnataka and India

What This Means for EV Buyers and Dealers

If you are buying an EV in Bengaluru, the numbers point to a mature two-wheeler market and a smaller but real car market. Electric two-wheelers registered about 300 a day, so used-EV and service ecosystems for scooters are likely to be deeper here than in most cities. For electric cars, at about 40 a day, the market is thinner, so it is worth comparing dealer stock, waiting periods and service-centre access before you book.

If you work in the trade, the takeaway is that two-wheelers drive volume, while cars and commercial vehicles drive the higher-value part of the fleet story. Check the current Karnataka tax rules before quoting on-road prices for electric cars.

Evfy's Take

The headline number is 17.5%, but the more useful reading is how differently Bengaluru behaves for two-wheelers and cars. Using the reported figures, we worked out three things (these are Evfy's own calculations, so treat them as approximate):

• Bengaluru holds about 71% of Karnataka's electric cars (46,596 of 65,915) but only about 52% of its electric two-wheelers (roughly 3.8 lakh of 7.3 lakh). Cars are far more concentrated in the capital.
• One city, about 4.5% of India's monthly EVs. Bengaluru's 13,389 registrations equal roughly 4.5% of the national total of about 2.98 lakh. Its electric two-wheelers are about 5.2% of India's, and its electric cars about 4.1%.
• The fleet is still early. EVs are 17.5% of new registrations but only about 3.8% of Bengaluru's roughly 1.3 crore vehicles. Electric two-wheelers are about 4.3% of the city's two-wheeler fleet, and electric cars about 1.8% of its car fleet.

That gap between a 17.5% flow and a 3.8% stock is the real story. At this pace, the fleet share climbs steadily, but it takes years, not months, to change what the roads look like.

Caveat: the city figures come from the state transport department and the national figures from Vahan-based trackers, so small definitional differences are possible.
