After focusing solely on electric vehicles in India, BYD is now preparing to enter a new segment. The Chinese automaker is set to launch its first plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) in the country today, a move that could attract buyers who like EVs but are still concerned about charging infrastructure and long-distance travel.

While the brand has not officially revealed the model, industry reports suggest it could be either the Sealion 6 DM-i or the Atto 2 DM-i. Both models use BYD's latest DM-i plug-in hybrid technology, which is designed to deliver an electric vehicle-like driving experience while retaining the convenience of a petrol engine.

What Is BYD's DM-i Hybrid Technology?

Unlike conventional hybrid systems, BYD's DM-i setup relies primarily on the electric motor to drive the vehicle. The petrol engine plays a supporting role by helping charge the battery and assisting during highway journeys or when extra power is required.

This approach allows drivers to enjoy smooth and quiet electric driving for daily commutes while eliminating concerns about charging availability on longer trips.

Which Model Could Be Launched?

The stronger possibility appears to be the BYD Sealion 6 DM-i, a premium SUV positioned above the Atto 3. Globally, it is offered with a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor and battery pack. The Atto 2 DM-i is another contender. It is a more compact SUV and could appeal to buyers looking for a rival to popular mid-size SUVs in the Indian market.

One of the biggest advantages of BYD's plug-in hybrid technology is its claimed driving range. Depending on the model and battery configuration, the SUV could offer a combined range of close to 1,000 km or even more on a full charge and fuel tank.

This could make it an attractive option for buyers who want lower running costs without fully switching to an electric vehicle.

India's EV market is growing steadily, but many buyers still hesitate due to charging concerns, especially those who frequently travel long distances. BYD's plug-in hybrid technology aims to bridge that gap by combining electric mobility with the flexibility of a petrol-powered vehicle.

With the official launch scheduled for today, all eyes are on BYD to see which model it introduces and how it plans to position its first hybrid offering in the Indian market.
