Kia has just announced BaaS finance program for its Carens Clavis EV, one of the most affordable electric MPVs. On the other hand, BYD's eMax 7 MPV is making waves in the segment, as it was the only electric MPV in the premium segment. But the thing is, which one grabs your plug-in attention? Let's break it down for you in this comparison and figure out which is more suitable for you.
Design
When it comes to design, my heart goes out to the Carens Clavis EV, but let's not overlook the BYD eMAX 7; it doesn't shout attention, but carries a subtle design. The front fascia of Clavis EV looks similar to the ICE version, apart from the closed-off grille along the charging port in the middle. Moreover, the lower bumper has been tweaked with EV-specific elements. Moving to the side, everything remains the same except the wheels; the EV gets 17-inch dual-tone aero alloy wheels. While at the rear, things remain pretty similar.
On the other hand, the BYD eMax 7 has a typical MPV-type silhouette. The front fascia features sleek LED headlamps connected by a chrome strip with the BYD logo in the middle. Coming to the side profile, you'll notice that the design kind of flows towards the end. While the rear has been kept very tidy with no nonsense connected to taillamps by a thin chrome strip and badging.
Features

Stepping inside either of these EVs, you'll find no shortage of features; both are generously equipped. The Clavis EV is more tech-friendly with its twin 12.3-inch displays, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an 8-speaker Bose sound system, a switchable touch panel for media and climate controls, panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, powered driver's seat, Boss Mode and one-touch electric tumble for the second row. It even supports V2L and V2V charging, adding a layer of practicality for the connected lifestyle. What's more, the Clavis EV offers more usable space in the third row and a larger boot even with all three rows up, making it surprisingly practical for its size. However, third-row space and boot capacity in the eMax 7 are more limited compared to the Clavis, which may be a consideration for larger families.
Meanwhile, the eMax 7 leans into a more premium vibe with soft-touch materials across the cabin, a new 12.8-inch floating touchscreen, dual wireless chargers, and an updated centre console with a stylish drive selector. The top-end variant brings in Level 2 ADAS, powered and ventilated front seats, a panoramic glass roof, and frameless wipers. Both EVs offer safety essentials like six airbags, disc brakes on all wheels, and a 360-degree camera, making them feature-loaded in their unique way.

Powertrains
Under the hood, the Kia Clavis EV gets two battery pack options: 42kWh and 51.4 kWh. These battery packs give out a claimed range of 404km and 490 km, respectively. The smaller pack comes with a 135 hp motor, while the larger one gets 171 hp, both producing 255 Nm of torque. The 51.4 kWh variant can sprint from 0-100 km/h in just 8.4 seconds. In contrast, the BYD eMAX 7 also gets two battery pack options: 55.4 kWh and 71.8 kWh units. These give out a claimed range of 420km and 530 km, respectively. Power outputs stand at 163 hp and 204 hp respectively, with a robust 310 Nm of torque and a quick 0-100 km/h time of 8.6 seconds for the Superior variant.
Pricing
Let's start with what matters the most to the buyers, the price tag. The Kia Carens Clavis EV is priced aggressively, starting with just Rs 17.99 lakh (ex-showroom) and going up to Rs 24.49 lakh (ex-showroom), which makes it India's most affordable electric MPV. In contrast, the BYD eMax 7 positions itself as a bit premium, with prices ranging from Rs 26.90 lakh (ex-showroom) to Rs 29.90 lakh (ex-showroom). But here's the catch: Kia has rolled out a BaaS program for the Carens Clavis EV at a rental fee of Rs 3.3 per km.
Overall, the Kia Carens Clavis EV is the better choice for most buyers because it is more affordable, practical, feature-loaded, and offers better family usability with more usable third-row and boot space. The BaaS program also makes it easier to buy, but buyers should calculate the per-km rental cost before opting for it. The BYD eMax 7, on the other hand, is better for those who want a more premium cabin, stronger performance, and longer range, and are comfortable paying a higher price.
