MG SELECT Launches Battery-as-a-Service for Cyberster and M9: Cyberster From ₹72.49 Lakh, M9 From ₹69.99 Lakh

MG SELECT has introduced a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) ownership option for the MG Cyberster and MG M9, its two luxury EVs. Under the introductory BaaS pricing announced on September 17, 2026, the Cyberster starts at ₹72.49 lakh (ex-showroom) plus a ₹8.00/km battery rental, while the M9 starts at ₹69.99 lakh (ex-showroom) plus the same rental rate. Buyers own the vehicle outright but pay separately for the battery on a per-kilometre basis, which brings the upfront price down by roughly ₹10 lakh on each model compared with buying them outright today.

What MG SELECT Announced

MG SELECT is the luxury brand channel of JSW MG Motor India, sold separately from mainstream MG models through its own network of Experience Centres. Its two products, the Cyberster roadster and the M9 luxury MPV, have so far only been available for outright purchase.

That changes with this announcement. MG SELECT customers can now choose a BaaS route: pay a lower upfront ex-showroom price for the car itself, and cover the battery separately through a ₹8.00/km rental charge as you drive. MG already runs a similar battery-subscription model on the mass-market MG Windsor EV; this extends the same approach to its luxury lineup for the first time.

BaaS vs Buying Outright: How Much You Actually Save

To see what BaaS actually changes, it helps to line it up against the current outright, own-the-battery price of both cars.

Both cars have gone through two rounds of price hikes since their 2025 launch, once in April 2026 and again in July 2026, which took the Cyberster from its original ₹72.49 lakh launch price to ₹82.50 lakh, and the M9 from ₹69.90 lakh to ₹79.95 lakh. The new BaaS pricing effectively brings the entry point on both cars back down to close to where they started at launch, in exchange for the ongoing per-km battery fee.

A rough breakeven, worked out by Evfy: dividing the roughly ₹10 lakh upfront saving by the ₹8.00/km rental works out to around 1.25 lakh km before the rental fee alone equals what you saved upfront. That's a genuine crossover point, but it's a big number for what are largely low-mileage, often chauffeur-driven luxury vehicles. This is our own estimate based on the published prices; it doesn't factor in the interest you could earn by investing the ₹10 lakh you didn't spend upfront, or any difference in resale value between a car with an owned battery and one on a rental plan, so treat it as a starting point rather than the full financial picture.

Its lounge-style cabin centres on Presidential Seats with 16-way adjustment, 8 massage modes, and ventilation and heating, all controlled through an Intelligent Arm Rest. Other highlights include a yacht-style dual sunroof, 64-colour ambient lighting, and a 13-speaker sound system. On safety, the M9 gets Level 2 ADAS, a driver monitoring system, seven airbags, and a 5-star rating in both EURO NCAP and ANCAP testing.

MG SELECT Experience Centre Network

MG SELECT currently runs 15 Experience Centres across 14 cities in India. These are positioned as gallery-style retail spaces built around the brand's "Reimagining Luxury" theme, rather than conventional showrooms.

Should You Choose BaaS or Buy Outright

BaaS makes more sense if:

• You'd rather have a lower upfront ex-showroom outlay and put that capital elsewhere.
• Your annual mileage on the car is modest, well under the roughly 1.25 lakh km lifetime breakeven.
• You'd prefer MG SELECT to carry the battery's degradation and replacement risk instead of you.

Buying outright still makes sense if:

• You expect to rack up very high lifetime mileage, such as heavy chauffeur-driven or fleet-style use.
• You'd rather have one clean, one-time cost with no recurring per-km line item to track.
• You plan to keep the car long enough that owning the battery outright works out cheaper overall.

The more interesting story here isn't just that MG SELECT has added a BaaS option. It's that MG is bringing the same battery-subscription playbook it already runs on the Windsor EV up into its luxury portfolio, and using it to effectively undo two rounds of 2026 price hikes on paper. Buyers who baulked at the Cyberster's ₹82.50 lakh or the M9's ₹79.95 lakh sticker can now get in at close to 2025 launch-day pricing, provided they're comfortable with a recurring per-km fee running in the background for as long as they own the car.

For the kind of low-mileage, chauffeur-driven buyer these cars are typically aimed at, the math in the breakeven section above suggests that fee is unlikely to bite hard for a very long time.
