Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reportedly directed the SPG to reduce the size of his official convoy by nearly 50% while also increasing the use of electric vehicles, all of this without any fresh purchases.
The move comes amid growing fuel conservation efforts and a broader government push toward austerity and energy independence.
Traditionally, the Prime Minister’s convoy includes 15–20 vehicles comprising the Bulletproof PM car, Decoy SUVs, Jammer vehicles, SPG security SUVs, Ambulances and Local police escorts. While fully replacing every vehicle with an EV may not happen immediately, India’s growing premium EV ecosystem now offers several capable alternatives for different convoy roles.

1. VIP Protection & PM Escort Vehicles

The most potential EV replacement candidates are luxury electric SUVs available in India, but these aren't available in bulletproof versions yet.

Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV

With it's ultra-quiet cabin, advanced tech and long-range capability, the EQS SUV could easily serve as a high-level escort or VIP movement vehicle. It's comfort and refinement align closely with existing luxury convoy standards.

BMW i7

The BMW i7 is currently one of the most premium EV sedans in India and could potentially act as a future ceremonial or diplomatic movement car. It already offers high-security architecture globally.

Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology

The all-electric G-Class could become one of the most capable EVs for VIP Movement, with it's iconic armored-like presence, off-road capability and instant torque delivery, the G 580 fits naturally into VIP protection and tactical convoy applications.

2. SPG Security & Decoy SUV

Convoy operations require multiple identical-looking vehicles for tactical movement, route protection and close security coordination. India's new-generation electric SUVs are now capable enough to handle these demanding duties.

Tata Harrier.EV

The Harrier EV brings strong road presence, high ground clearance and Tata Motor's growing EV expertise. It's robust SUV stance makes it a practical candidate for SPG escort and decoy operations, specially for urban and highway deployments.

Mahindra XEV 9s

Mahindra's futuristic XEV 9s combines performance, advanced ADAS technology and great interiors. It's aggressive nature and performance could make it suitable for rapid-response escort duties within a convoy setup.

3. Pilot Cars & Local Police Support

Not every convoy vehicle needs to be ultra-luxury. Several mass-market EVs can efficiently support pilot and coordination duties.
  • Tata Curvv.ev
  • Mahindra XEV 9e
  • VinFast VF MPV 7
These EVs offer lower running costs, instant acceleration and quieter operation - ideal for city movement and rapid deployment roles.

4. Ambulance & Emergency support vehicles

India is also seeing a rise of electric commercial vehicles that can support medial and logistics duties, but an ideal vehicle to fin in this profile is yet to be launched in Indian market.

The Bigger Message Behind the Move

The real significance of this shift goes beyond just reducing fuel usage. A Prime Ministerial convoy adopting EVs sends a powerful signal about India’s evolving mobility ecosystem.
It highlights three key priorities:
  • Reduce fuel dependency.
  • Promoting domestic EV adoption.
  • Demonstrating Government-led sustainability options.
India may still rely on armored ICE vehicles for certain high-security roles today, but the technology gap is narrowing rapidly. With more premium EVs entering the market and localized EV manufacturing growing, future government convoys could become significantly more electric than ever before.
And perhaps most importantly, this move shows that EV adoption is no longer just about consumers — it is becoming part of national policy symbolism itself.
