JLR opened bookings for the Range Rover Electric in India on September 2, 2026, its first fully electric flagship SUV. The token amount is ₹10 lakh, and you can currently reserve the standard-wheelbase Autobiography, the long-wheelbase SV, SV Ultra or SV Black, or a limited First Edition trim. India pricing hasn't been announced yet, though global figures and import costs point to a starting price well past ₹3 crore, ex-showroom. The car runs a 118.5kWh battery, a claimed 600km WLTP range, and 405kW of combined output. Here's everything confirmed so far, and what to weigh before you commit that booking amount.

What's Confirmed So Far

The Range Rover Electric is JLR's first ground-up, in-house-built EV. The 2018 Jaguar I-Pace came first, but that car was contract-manufactured by Magna Steyr in Austria. This one is built at JLR's own Solihull plant in the UK, the same factory that has made Range Rovers since 1970.

For India, it arrives as a fully imported unit (CBU), not something assembled locally like the standard ICE Range Rover. Bookings opened against a ₹10 lakh token, and buyers can currently choose between five configurations. JLR hasn't announced an India price or a delivery timeline yet, and both should be treated as genuinely open questions rather than something you can estimate with confidence.

The car also won't get any relief from the India-UK Free Trade Agreement, since EVs are specifically carved out of the duty cuts that agreement brings for UK-built cars. More on that below.

The traction and off-road systems are where JLR has clearly spent its engineering budget. Integrated Traction Management (ITM) adjusts motor response within 50 milliseconds, which JLR says is roughly 100 times faster than a combustion Range Rover can react. Intelligent Driveline Dynamics shifts rear torque anywhere between zero and 100 percent depending on grip. In single-pedal off-road mode, the SUV can pull away on 33-degree slopes and complete rolling climbs up to 45 degrees.

There's also ThermAssist, a thermal management system JLR says adds up to 40km of range and cuts heating energy use by 40 percent, and a Battery Digital Twin that tracks over 900 diagnostic points and works with the car's over-the-air update capability. JLR has filed more than 300 patent applications tied to this vehicle, more than any previous Range Rover.

Two trims sold abroad, the SE and HSE, aren't part of India's current booking list. That could change closer to launch, but as things stand, Indian buyers are being offered the higher end of the range only.

The cabin carries over almost entirely from the ICE Range Rover: a 13.1-inch curved touchscreen, a 13.7-inch digital driver display, and the same dashboard and control layout. The main visual tells are what's missing rather than what's new. There's no prominent "Electric" badge, and no exhaust outlets at the rear. Depending on variant, expect a panoramic sunroof, multi-zone climate control, and heated, ventilated and massaging seats.

India's price isn't out, but other markets give a sense of where the model sits internationally.

A quick note on that UK figure: outlets don't agree on which trim it maps to. Some report £154,070 as the entry-level SE; others describe it as the Autobiography price, with SE pricing not yet disclosed. We'd treat that specific detail as unsettled rather than repeat one version as fact.

None of these numbers translate cleanly to India. A straight currency conversion undersells what the car will actually cost here, since India's CBU import route stacks customs duty, GST and cess on top of the ex-factory price, and none of that shows up in a UK or US sticker. That's also why unofficial India estimates cluster around ₹3 crore to ₹3.5 crore, ex-showroom, well above what a simple exchange-rate conversion of the UK or US price would suggest.

Coverage of this launch hasn't settled on a single rival for the Range Rover Electric, and it's easy to see why once you look at the numbers. If the India price lands where estimates suggest, the G 580 EQ is the closest match by cost, but it's a smaller, boxier vehicle built for a different, more technical style of off-roading than the Range Rover's air-suspension, long-wheelbase luxury brief. The EQS SUV and iX undercut the Range Rover Electric's estimated price by roughly half, which makes them mainstream luxury-EV alternatives rather than direct rivals to a flagship.

Should You Book It?

The honest answer depends on how much the price uncertainty bothers you.

Reasons to book now:

  • The SV Ultra is reportedly invitation-only in some markets, so early registration may matter more for the top-spec version than for the Autobiography
  • The First Edition is explicitly limited, and colour and trim allocation could run out before India pricing is even announced
  • A ₹10 lakh token is a small fraction of the car's likely final price, so the financial exposure of booking early is limited relative to what's at stake if you miss allocation

Reasons to wait:

  • Nothing about the ₹10 lakh amount tells you what the car will actually cost. Unofficial estimates span a ₹50 lakh range (₹3-3.5 crore), which is a wide gap to commit against
  • JLR hasn't stated whether the India booking amount is refundable. Confirm this directly with your dealership before paying anything
  • Established rivals like the EQS SUV and BMW iX are already on sale, fully priced, and available to test drive today, which isn't true of the Range Rover Electric yet

Evfy's Take: The Sand Dune Story Behind the Delay

Most of the coverage around this launch has repeated the same line about the delay: JLR needed "more testing" and cited "changing market conditions." That's true, but it skips the actual engineering story, and it's worth knowing before you decide whether to book.

JLR originally built a dedicated induction motor for the Range Rover Electric's front axle. During testing on Dubai's Big Red dune, a roughly 300-foot sand dune that's part of JLR's standard hot-weather test protocol, that motor overheated under the repeated high-load climbs the test demands and lost power. Engineers scrapped the induction motor entirely and replaced it with a duplicate of the rear permanent-magnet motor instead. According to JLR vehicle engineers, that swap triggered an 18-month re-engineering effort: doubling the rear motor supply chain, redesigning the front motor cradle, rewriting the control software, and re-running the validation testing from scratch.

That's genuinely useful context for an Indian buyer, more so than for a UK one. Range Rover's entire brand promise rests on off-road capability, and the company chose to blow past its own launch date rather than sell an EV whose front motor cooks itself climbing a dune. India has its own share of desert and high-heat terrain, from Rajasthan to Kutch, and the ThermAssist thermal system JLR is now marketing so heavily exists precisely because of this failure and fix. It's a stronger reason to trust the car's heat management than anything in JLR's own press release, simply because it shows what happens when the marketing claim gets tested against reality and initially fails.
