India's electric vehicle market continued its upward trajectory in May 2026, with passenger EV sales rising to 26,620 units, an 8.2% increase over April's 24,592 units. Amid the growing competition, one model stood out from the crowd: the Tata Punch EV.
The electric micro-SUV emerged as India's highest-selling EV during the month after registering 3,681 units, underlining its growing appeal among buyers. But what exactly is driving its success?
Affordable Entry Price
One of the biggest reasons behind the Punch EV's popularity is its pricing. Tata Motors has positioned it as one of the most accessible electric SUVs in the country, with prices ranging from Rs 9.69 lakh to Rs 12.59 lakh (ex-showroom).
The company has also expanded affordability through its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) programme. Under this scheme, buyers can purchase the vehicle for as little as Rs 6.49 lakh and pay a battery subscription charge of Rs 2.60 per kilometre. This significantly lowers the upfront ownership cost, making EV ownership more attainable for a wider audience.
Design

Unlike many entry-level EVs that follow a hatchback design, the Punch EV offers SUV-inspired styling with high ground clearance and a commanding driving position. At the same time, its compact dimensions make it easy to manoeuvre through congested city streets and fit into tight parking spaces. This combination has made it particularly attractive to urban buyers looking for practicality without sacrificing SUV appeal.
Bigger Battery, Longer Range
Tata recently updated the Punch EV with a larger 40 kWh battery pack, increasing its claimed ARAI-certified driving range to 468 km on a single charge. The smaller 30kWh battery pack runs up to 375 km within a single charge. The improved range reduces charging anxiety and makes the Punch EV suitable not only for daily commutes but also for occasional highway journeys, broadening its appeal among buyers.
Loaded With Features
Another factor behind the Punch EV's success is the long equipment list. The updated model brings several premium features that were once limited to higher segments.

Key highlights include:
- 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system
- Connected LED tail lamps
- Redesigned alloy wheels
- 360-degree camera
- Ventilated front seats
- Connected car technology
- Wireless smartphone connectivity
These additions give the Punch EV a more premium feel while keeping pricing competitive.
Apart from the car itself, Tata Motors has built a strong EV ecosystem that makes owning an electric vehicle easier. Buyers benefit from the company's wide service network, expanding charging infrastructure, and years of experience in the EV segment.
For many customers, this means better peace of mind when switching from a petrol or diesel car to an electric one.
The Tata Punch EV offers almost everything buyers look for in an affordable electric SUV. It combines attractive pricing, SUV styling, a long driving range, modern features, and low running costs in one package.
