With fuel prices staying high and traffic becoming a part of everyday life, electric vehicles are emerging as a smart choice for city commuters. They offer lower running costs, easy drivability and a quieter driving experience compared to conventional petrol and diesel cars. Thanks to the growing charging network across Indian cities, owning an EV is now more convenient than ever. If you're planning to switch, here are some of the best electric cars for daily city commutes.
1. Tata Tiago EV

Tata Motors recently introduced the updated Tiago EV, which is now available under the brand's Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) program. This makes it one of the most affordable electric cars in India. While the standard starting price stands at Rs 6.99 lakh (ex-showroom), the BaaS option reduces the upfront cost to Rs 4.69 lakh, with battery usage charged separately at Rs 2.6 per km. The Tiago EV is offered with two battery pack choices: 19.2 kWh and 24 kWh, delivering a claimed range of up to 223 km and 293 km, respectively, on a single charge. Its compact size, low running costs and practical range make it a strong option for daily urban commuting.
2. MG Comet EV

The MG Comet EV may not appeal to everyone with its unconventional design, but it remains one of the most practical electric cars for city use. Priced from Rs 7.63 lakh (ex-showroom), the Comet becomes significantly more accessible under MG's Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) program, bringing the upfront cost down to Rs 4.99 lakh, while battery usage is charged at Rs 3.2 per km. The compact EV is available with a 17.3 kWh battery pack, while select Fast Charging (FC) variants get a 17.4 kWh unit. Both versions offer a claimed driving range of up to 230 km on a single charge, making them ideal for daily urban commutes. Additionally, the Comet EV can be charged from 0 to 100 per cent in around 3.5 hours using a 7.4 kW AC fast charger, adding to its convenience for city users.
3. Tata Punch EV

For buyers looking for a compact electric SUV, the Tata Punch EV is one of the most compelling options in the segment. While the EV carries a starting price of Rs 9.69 lakh (ex-showroom), Tata's Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) program reduces the upfront cost to Rs 6.49 lakh, with battery usage charged separately at Rs 2.6 per km. The Punch EV is available with two battery pack options: 30 kWh and 40 kWh. However, the BaaS pricing currently applies to the entry-level variant equipped with the 30 kWh battery. This version delivers a claimed range of up to 315 km on a single charge, making it well-suited for daily city commutes as well as occasional longer drives.
4. MG Windsor

The MG Windsor EV is a popular choice among buyers looking for a spacious and feature-rich electric vehicle. It is priced between Rs 14.10 lakh and Rs 18.60 lakh (ex-showroom). Like other MG electric cars, the Windsor is also offered with the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) option, although the battery rental charges differ based on the battery pack selected. The Windsor EV was initially introduced with a 38 kWh battery pack, while a larger 52.9 kWh battery was added to the lineup later. Customers opting for the 38 kWh version are required to pay a battery rental fee of Rs 3.9 per kilometre, whereas the larger 52.9 kWh variant comes with a rental charge of Rs 4.5 per kilometre. With its spacious cabin, premium features and practical driving range, the Windsor EV is well-suited for both daily city commutes and longer journeys.
5. Maruti e Vitara

Maruti Suzuki recently entered the electric vehicle space with the launch of the e Vitara. The electric SUV is priced between Rs 15.99 lakh and Rs 20.01 lakh (ex-showroom). To make ownership more accessible, the company is also offering the e Vitara under a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model. With the BaaS option, the entry-level variant's upfront price drops to Rs 10.99 lakh, while battery usage is charged at Rs 3.99 per kilometre. The top-spec version, on the other hand, can be purchased for Rs 14.51 lakh, with a battery rental fee of Rs 4.39 per kilometre. The BaaS program significantly lowers the initial purchase cost, making Maruti's first EV a more attractive option for buyers looking to switch to electric mobility.
