The Ministry of Heavy Industries has launched an online application portal on June 24th for a scheme designed to encourage domestic EV manufacturing.In order to strengthen domestic production capabilities, Heavy Industries Minister HD Kumaraswamy announced the launch of the Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Electric Passenger Cars in India (SPMEPCI) through social media, describing it as a significant step towards establishing India as a global electric vehicle manufacturing hub. He also emphasized that the initiative will support domestic manufacturing growth and job creation.The application portal will accept submissions from interested participants from June 24th to October 21st, 2025.The scheme, officially notified on June 2nd, targets investments from international electric vehicle manufacturers while positioning India as a preferred manufacturing hub for EVs .This scheme aligns with India’s commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070 and supports the development of a sustainable innovation-driven economy.To protect the interests of domestic EV manufacturers, the reduced import duty rate of 15% will apply only to electric vehicles priced above USD 35,000 (approximately ₹30 lakh).Click here to find out more about SPMEPCI.
