However, sales started gaining traction following the launch of a refreshed model.In November 2024 , River Mobility introduced an updated version of the Indie featuring a chain final drive , an industry first in its segment. This enhancement was aimed at improving durability and lowering long-term ownership costs. The new version is priced at ₹1.43 lakh (ex-showroom), higher than the original model.The Indie uses a 4 kWh battery pack and delivers a claimed IDC range of 161 km . Its motor produces a peak power of 6.7 kW and torque of 26 Nm . The scooter also stands out for its impressive 55 litres of lockable storage with 12 litres in the glovebox and 43 litres under the seat, the largest in its category. Additional features include front footpegs, 14-inch wheels at both ends, and three riding modes: Eco, Ride, and Rush.River Mobility has adopted a strategic rollout plan, initially focusing on southern and western India, regions that are leading the charge in electric two-wheeler adoption. The company currently operates in cities such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Hubli, Visakhapatnam, Kochi, Coimbatore, Vellore, Tirupati, and Mysore. Plans are underway to expand into Trivandrum and Vijayawada. This investment positioned Yamaha as one of the early backers of the Bengaluru-based EV startup.A little over a year later, Yamaha and River Mobility are collaborating to co-develop and manufacture Yamaha’s first electric scooter for the Indian market, codenamed RY01 . Built on the River Indie platform , this model will mark Yamaha’s entry into the rapidly growing Indian electric two-wheeler segment.The RY01 is a result of joint development efforts involving Yamaha’s engineering teams from Japan, the United States, and Europe, along with River’s in-house team in Bengaluru. Production of the RY01 will take place at River’s Hoskote facility . While Yamaha retains product ownership, River is responsible for the entire execution, from research and development to battery integration, engineering, and manufacturing.The RY01 was recently spotted testing on public roads in Bengaluru, indicating that its launch could be imminent, potentially timed with the upcoming festive season.
