Tata Motors Achieves Historic EV Sales Milestone
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd (TMPVL) has reached a significant milestone by selling 2.5 lakh electric cars cumulatively in India. This achievement stands out in a market where internal combustion engine vehicles still dominate and electric mobility is in a relatively early phase.

Tata’s Dominance in India’s EV Market
Tata Motors has emerged as the undisputed leader in India’s electric car space, accounting for around two-thirds of all EVs sold in the country to date. The brand has played a crucial role in bringing electric cars from a niche offering to a mainstream choice for Indian consumers, effectively shaping the country’s EV ecosystem.
Key Contributors to Tata’s EV Success
Among Tata’s electric lineup, the Nexon EV has been a standout performer. It became India’s first electric car to cross 1 lakh cumulative sales, contributing significantly to Tata’s overall EV volumes.
The Punch EV has also proven to be a strong seller, consistently ranking among the best-selling electric cars in the country.

Tata Motors’ Current EV Portfolio
Tata Motors currently offers one of the most diverse EV portfolios in India. Its passenger vehicle range includes Tiago EV, Tigor EV, Punch EV, Nexon EV, Curvv EV and Harrier EV, while the XPRES-T EV caters to commercial and fleet operators. This wide lineup has helped Tata address multiple price points and use cases in the EV market.
New Electric Cars Planned by 2026
Despite having the largest EV portfolio in India, Tata Motors is not slowing down. The company has announced plans to introduce up to five new electric vehicles by FY30, including both new models and updates.
For the near term, Tata has confirmed three major EV launches for calendar year 2026:
- Updated Punch EV, expected to receive design and feature enhancements
- Sierra EV, the electric version of one of India’s most anticipated nameplates
- Avinya, a completely new EV brand positioned as a futuristic offering from Tata Motors
