Vietnamese EV brand VinFast is preparing to make a big mark in India. The company has announced that it will start operations at its new EV assembly plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, by the end of June 2025. This move makes India one of the key global markets in VinFast’s expansion journey. As part of this plan, work began on a new electric vehicle manufacturing facility in April 2024. The factory is coming up on a 400-acre site at the SIPCOT industrial park in southern Tamil Nadu, and the first phase alone will see an investment of Rs 4,000 crore over five years.What the factory means for IndiaThe plant is expected to produce up to 150,000 EVs annually, not just for India but also for export to South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. It’s also projected to create around 3,000 to 3,500 jobs, boosting the region’s economy. According to VinFast India CEO Pham Sanh Chau, Tamil Nadu was chosen for its skilled talent pool and proactive EV policies.Creating a brand presenceVinFast aims to build a strong network of dealerships across India and will focus on offering good value, affordable pricing, and strong after-sales service. The company’s strategy includes local assembly, which will help it price its vehicles more competitively in India’s growing EV market.VinFast’s entry into India adds more pressure on existing players like Tata Motors and MG Motor, and it also raises the stakes for other global brands eyeing the Indian EV space. With production starting soon, it’s clear that VinFast is serious about becoming a major EV brand in India.
