Volvo Cars India has discontinued the EX40 electric SUV, marking the end of one of the brand's most accessible EV offerings in the country. The move comes as the Swedish luxury carmaker prepares to refresh its Indian portfolio with two new electric vehicles expected to arrive in 2026.
The EX40, which was essentially a renamed version of the XC40 Recharge, played a major role in Volvo's electric journey in India. It offered a premium electric SUV experience with a strong focus on safety, performance and practicality. However, with newer-generation EVs arriving globally, Volvo appears to be restructuring its lineup to make way for more advanced products.
Why Has Volvo Discontinued the EX40?
While Volvo has not officially revealed exactly, it has been removed from the official website. The decision is likely part of the company's broader strategy to streamline its electric vehicle range. The EX40 was based on an older generation platform and has now been overshadowed by newer products such as the EX30 and the upcoming EX60 in global markets.
What EX40 Had On Offer?
The Volvo EX40 used to come with a Rear Wheel Drive setup, which is powered by a 69kWh battery pack. This setup together belts out 238hp and 420 nm of torque. It can go up to 475km within a single charge. In terms of features, the EX40 gets Pixel LED headlamps, two-zone climate control, a 12-inch digital driver’s display, a 9-inch infotainment unit, park assist, 19-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, powered front seats, wireless phone charging, a 360-degree camera and a Harman Kardon sound system. The last two features were not offered with the single-motor variant of the XC40 Recharge.
Following the discontinuation of the EX40, Volvo's Indian EV portfolio now comprises the EX30 and EC40. The former is the brand's most affordable electric offering, priced at Rs. 41 lakh (ex-showroom) and powered by a 69 kWh battery pack. Meanwhile, the EC40 commands a price tag of Rs. 59 lakh (ex-showroom) and packs a larger 78 kWh battery alongside a dual-motor all-wheel-drive configuration, catering to buyers seeking higher performance and a sportier coupe-SUV design.
Two New Volvo EVs Expected in 2026
The second half of 2026 is expected to be a busy period for Volvo India. Alongside the updated EX40, the company is also planning to launch the flagship EX90. The three-row electric SUV sits at the top of Volvo's global EV range and will give the brand a full-size luxury electric offering in India, a segment that is gradually beginning to attract more buyers.
