Electric vehicle owners in Delhi could soon find it much easier to charge their vehicles. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is planning to establish large EV charging hubs at key public locations, including Metro stations, busy markets, and commercial complexes, as part of its efforts to strengthen the city's charging infrastructure.

Over 25 charging points at each location

Unlike regular public charging stations, these upcoming facilities will function as dedicated charging hubs, with each location expected to house more than 25 charging points. The hubs will be developed at MCD-managed parking lots and other suitable government-owned land where vehicles are parked for longer periods.

The charging stations will cater to both electric cars and two-wheelers, helping address the growing demand for accessible public charging as EV adoption continues to rise in the capital.

Fast charging and battery swapping planned

The proposed hubs are expected to offer a combination of fast and slow chargers. Fast chargers will allow users to quickly top up their vehicles at busy locations, while slow chargers will serve vehicles parked for extended durations.

In addition, the MCD is also planning to introduce battery-swapping facilities, particularly for electric two-wheelers. This will enable riders to replace a discharged battery with a fully charged one in just a few minutes, reducing waiting time.

PSUs Invited to Develop Charging Hubs

To execute the project, the civic body has invited proposals from nearly 10 public sector undertakings (PSUs) involved in EV charging infrastructure. Two organisations have already submitted proposals, with one suggesting a charging hub featuring around 30 charging points and another proposing a facility with 27 chargers. The proposals are currently being evaluated.

Since these charging hubs will involve significant investment and expensive equipment, the MCD is also considering security measures such as fencing and on-site guards to protect the infrastructure.

Delhi's EV Charging Network Set To Expand

Delhi currently has around 470 public EV charging and battery-swapping stations. The addition of these large-format charging hubs is expected to significantly improve charging accessibility across the city, making EV ownership more convenient for both existing users and those considering the switch to electric mobility.
