India’s electric vehicle (EV) landscape has seen a dramatic reshaping. JSW MG Motor India’s Windsor EV has dethroned long-standing champions Tata Nexon EV and Punch EV, becoming the best-selling electric car in the country.
Launched on September 11, 2024, the Windsor EV has taken the Indian market by storm, clocking 23,918 unit sales within eight months. In comparison, Tata’s Nexon EV and Punch EV sold 11,296 and 9,563 units, respectively, totalling 20,859 units combined. That puts Windsor EV nearly 3,000 units ahead, a decisive lead in a highly competitive space.
Why Windsor EV is winning the EV race
Several factors have propelled Windsor EV’s rise:
Smart pricing strategy
Windsor EV’s launch at Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom) made headlines. This was possible thanks to MG’s Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model, which allows users to pay Rs 3.5/km for battery usage, excluding the battery cost from the vehicle’s price.
This made Windsor EV more financially attractive than:
- Tata Nexon EV: Starting at Rs 12.49 lakh
- Punch EV: Starting at Rs 9.99 lakh, but smaller and less feature-loaded
Value-added benefits
- Lifetime battery warranty for the first owner
- 60% assured buyback after 3 years or 45,000 km
- Free access to 9,000+ public charging stations via MG’s eHUB app for 1 year
These benefits not only reduce ownership anxiety but also build long-term trust among consumers.
Windsor Pro: The Curvv challenger
MG recently expanded the lineup with the Windsor Pro, equipped with a 52.9-kWh battery pack. This positions it as a direct rival to the Tata Curvv EV, which comes in 45-kWh and 55-kWh variants and is priced between Rs 17.49 lakh – Rs 21.99 lakh.
In contrast, Windsor Pro:
- Costs Rs 17.49 lakh (all-inclusive)
- Or Rs 12.49 lakh under the BaaS model
- Offers features like Level-2 ADAS, powered tailgate, V2V and V2L capability, and a 449 km MIDC range
- Analysts predict this variant will further solidify MG’s lead and put pressure on Tata, whose Curvv EV is already being offered with discounts up to Rs 1.71 lakh on 2024 models.
Market outlook
While Mahindra’s upcoming BE 6 and XUV.e9 have created buzz with 30,000+ bookings, their premium pricing and larger battery packs (59–79 kWh) cater to a different audience.
For now, the Windsor EV stands out by offering maximum value at a mid-range price, effectively rewriting India’s EV playbook. And with the Windsor Pro in the mix, JSW MG is signaling that its dominance is just beginning.
The Windsor EV’s swift rise is no fluke—it’s the result of a disruptive pricing strategy, consumer-first features, and a strong product roadmap. As India accelerates toward an electric future, MG’s Windsor series is leading the charge.
