After a successful IPO, Ather Energy is gearing up to reshape its product strategy by developing a new range of affordable electric scooters. The Bengaluru-based EV maker plans to channel the raised capital into building a low-cost scooter platform named “EL platform,” designed to make electric mobility more accessible to Indian commuters. In a conversation with Editor-in-Chief Siddharth Vinayak Pattankar, Tarun Mehta, Co-Founder and CEO of Ather Energy, stated:“We hope to launch at least a few products… and all scooters.”This indicates a focused expansion toward cost-effective, mass-market electric two-wheelers, diverging from Ather’s current portfolio of premium performance models. What is the EL platform?Unlike Ather’s performance-oriented 450 series, the upcoming EL platform is geared towards:Lower production costsSmaller battery packsBasic tech integration (LCD/TFT displays)Reduced top speeds for commuter useLonger charging timesThese scooters will prioritize affordability over high-end features, allowing Ather to tap into a much broader customer base, especially in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.Entry into the B2B marketAnother major strategic shift for Ather is its planned entry into the B2B (Business-to-Business) segment, a first for the brand. This includes models on the EL platform that may cater to delivery fleets, ride-sharing, and commercial use cases — an area dominated by rivals like Bajaj and Hero Electric.Launch timeline and market strategyThough Ather hasn’t confirmed an exact launch date, industry insiders suggest the new scooters could hit the market by 2026.The move aims to help Ather gain significant market share in India's booming EV sector, where price-sensitive consumers dominate. Following the success of its family-friendly Ather Rizta, the company is betting on volume-driven growth through affordability and accessibility.“I am hoping for them to be priced even better,” Mehta added, hinting at aggressive pricing strategies. What this means for the EV marketWith growing competition from Ola Electric, Bajaj, and TVS, Ather’s affordable scooter line could become a game-changer for EV adoption in India, especially in the budget segment. As the Indian government continues to push for cleaner mobility solutions, Ather's upcoming product range could become a key player in shaping the next phase of urban mobility.
