Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has revealed fresh details about its upcoming compact Defender, a model that is expected to sit below the current Defender range and broaden the brand's appeal. While earlier reports suggested the SUV would arrive exclusively as an electric vehicle, the British carmaker has now confirmed that buyers will also get a hybrid powertrain option.
Expected to arrive around 2027, the new SUV is widely believed to be called the Defender Sport and will become the second standalone model under the Defender family.
More Choice For Buyers
The compact Defender will be built on JLR's new Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA), a platform that was initially developed with electric vehicles in mind. However, the brand has now expanded its scope to accommodate hybrid powertrains as well, allowing customers to choose between fully electric and electrified combustion-powered versions.

The decision reflects changing market conditions, as demand for electric vehicles continues to vary across different regions. By offering multiple powertrain options, JLR aims to cater to a wider range of buyers with flexibility.
Smaller In Size
Although it will be positioned below the current Defender, the new model is not expected to be a compact SUV in the traditional sense. Reports suggest it could measure slightly over 4.5 metres in length, giving it a substantial road presence while remaining more manageable than the larger Defender models.
Despite its smaller footprint and electrified underpinnings, JLR says off-road performance will remain a key priority. The company is working to ensure the SUV retains the rugged character and go-anywhere ability that have become synonymous with the Defender name.
Defender DNA To Remain Intact
One of the biggest challenges for JLR is adapting the Defender formula to an electrified platform. Battery packaging, efficiency requirements and vehicle proportions often influence design and engineering decisions, particularly in EVs.

However, the brand has stressed that preserving the Defender's identity remains central to the project. The upcoming SUV is expected to feature the upright stance, robust design and adventure-focused nature associated with the brand.
JLR has indicated that work on the new model is progressing rapidly, with development already well underway. The compact Defender is expected to play a crucial role in expanding the Defender lineup, which currently consists of the Defender 90, 110 and 130.
More details, including the final name, specifications and powertrain outputs, are likely to emerge closer to its anticipated global debut in 2027.
