Tesla Set to Launch First Showrooms in India on 15th JulyTesla Inc is poised to begin formal operations in India by opening its first retail showroom on 15th July in Mumbai , marking a significant entry into the world’s third-largest automobile market. The move comes as the U.S.-based electric vehicle (EV) giant looks for new avenues of growth amid slowing sales in China and Europe. The showroom will open in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai, Maharashtra.According to sources familiar with the matter, Tesla has already shipped its first batch of vehicles to India, with Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) SUV s arriving in Mumbai from the company’s factory in Shanghai. The Model Y, which was the world’s best-selling electric car in 2023 with 1.22 million units sold , will be the first Tesla offering available in the country.The company is going to inaugurate its first showroom in Mumbai on 15th July, followed shortly by a second outlet in New Delhi. Both locations are being set up in upscale commercial districts aimed at appealing to affluent customers. The duties align with India’s 70% tariff on fully-built imported vehicles priced below $40,000 , excluding additional surcharges.Alongside the vehicles, Tesla has imported Supercharger components, spare parts, accessories, and branded merchandise from the United States, China, and the Netherlands, indicating a broader strategy to establish a robust ecosystem in India.Tesla’s India entry ends a long-standing period of uncertainty marked by disagreements with the Indian government over import tariffs and the demand for local manufacturing . The stalemate was broken following Elon Musk’s meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the U.S. earlier this year.While the company has not yet appointed a new country head following the exit of Prashanth Menon, Tesla is actively recruiting across key functions including charging infrastructure, retail operations, and public policy.
