BMW could be gearing up to bring its next-generation iX3 electric SUV to India. The German carmaker has filed a design patent for the upcoming model, which is based on the Vision Neue Klasse X concept unveiled in 2024. While a patent filing does not guarantee a launch, it does indicate that BMW is exploring the possibility of introducing the electric SUV in the Indian market.

The new iX3 will be the first SUV based on BMW's Neue Klasse EV platform and is expected to showcase the brand's next-generation design language, technology and electric powertrain advancements.

Inspired By BMW's Neue Klasse Vision

The upcoming iX3 will be the first SUV built on BMW's all-new Neue Klasse platform, which has been developed exclusively for electric vehicles. While the production version adopts a more practical approach, it stays remarkably close to the Vision Neue Klasse X concept in terms of design.

The SUV features BMW's reimagined kidney grille, sleek LED lighting elements, flush surfaces and a cleaner overall appearance. Signature BMW styling cues such as the Hofmeister kink on the C-pillar have also been retained, giving the SUV a familiar yet futuristic identity.

Tech Focussed Cabin

Inside, the new iX3 is expected to feature a minimalist layout centred around advanced digital tech. Highlights are likely to include BMW's Panoramic Vision display stretching across the base of the windscreen, a large central touchscreen, a 3D head-up display and the brand's latest Operating System X.

Unlike many modern EVs that rely heavily on touchscreen controls, BMW is expected to retain physical buttons for frequently used functions. Voice commands will also play a bigger role in controlling various vehicle features.

The electric SUV is expected to offer a spacious five-seat layout along with a generous boot and additional storage space under the front bonnet.

Underpinnings

The biggest upgrade lies underneath the bodywork. The second-generation iX3 will ride on BMW's dedicated Neue Klasse architecture and use the company's latest sixth-generation eDrive technology.

The new platform brings a more advanced 800V electrical system, improved battery technology and higher charging speeds. BMW claims the latest battery cells are significantly more energy-dense than before, helping improve efficiency and driving range.

The SUV is also expected to benefit from faster charging capabilities, with enough energy for hundreds of kilometres of driving being added in a short charging session.

Performance-Oriented Electric SUV

Globally, the upcoming iX3 is expected to be offered with multiple powertrain options, including dual-motor all-wheel-drive versions. BMW's new platform can support multiple motor configurations, allowing the brand to offer both efficiency-focused and performance-oriented variants.

India Launch Could Be On The Cards

While BMW India has not officially confirmed a launch timeline, the patent filing indicates that the brand is actively considering the new iX3 for the Indian market. If introduced, it could become one of the most technologically advanced electric SUVs in BMW's Indian lineup and further strengthen the brand's position in the premium EV space.
