The Indian electric vehicle market is getting crowded day by day and buyers now have more choices than before, which means more confusion, too. Two popular contenders in the premium mass-market EV space are the VinFast VF 6 and the MG Windsor EV. Although both are aimed at family buyers, they cater to slightly different needs. To make it clearer, here's a detailed comparison between the two.
Pricing
Before diving deep into the comparison, let's talk about the most important factor: the pricing. The VinFast VF6 comes at a starting price tag of Rs 17.29 lakh (ex-showroom) and goes up to Rs 19.19 lakh (ex-showroom) for the top trim Wind Infinity. On the other hand, Mg Windsor is available at a slightly lower price tag of Rs 14.09 lakh (ex-showroom) and tops out at Rs 18.59 lakh (ex-showroom), which costs Rs 1 lakh lower than that of VF6.
Notably, Windsor also offers a BaaS scheme, which you can pay for as per usage. At this, the Windsor starts at Rs 9.99 lakh and tops out at Rs 13.39 lakh. While battery rental charges differ, as per the battery packs. The smaller one 38kWh charges Rs 3.9 per km. Meanwhile, the bigger one, 52.9 kWh, charges Rs 4.5 per km.
Design
Design is perhaps the most subjective aspect of a car. What appeals to you may not necessarily appeal to me, or what impresses me may not appeal to you. For that reason, I'll leave the final verdict on styling entirely up to you.
That said, both EVs have very different personalities. The VinFast VF 6 looks like a conventional compact SUV, with sharp lines, muscular proportions and a sporty stance that should appeal to a wide audience right from the first glance.
On the other hand, the MG Windsor EV, however, takes a more unconventional approach. Its crossover-MPV silhouette and rounded design elements can seem a bit unusual initially, especially if you're expecting a traditional SUV shape. But that's also where its charm lies. The Windsor is one of those vehicles that tends to grow on you over time. The more you see it and live with it, the more its unique design starts to make sense, particularly when you realise how much interior space and practicality that shape unlocks.
Features
Step inside either vehicle and you'll notice a similar minimalist approach, where most functions are controlled through large touchscreen displays. However, don't mistake the simple layout for a lack of equipment, as both EVs are packed with a plethora of features.
The VinFast VF6 gets features like 12.9-inch infotainment, a head-up display replacing the instrument cluster, a cabin air filter, an 8-speaker sound system, a wireless charger, ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, vegan leather upholstery, connected car tech, and more.
On the other hand, the MG Windsor boasts a massive 15.6-inch infotainment system along with an 8.8-inch instrument cluster. Moreover, it gets a wireless connectivity for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, rear AC vents, ventilated front seats, powered driver's seat, 9-speaker Infinity sound system, wireless phone charging, panoramic glass roof and ambient lighting. Notably, for added comfort, the Windsor gets aero lounge seats with 135-degree recline.
Powertrain
The VinFast VF 6 only offers one battery pack: 59.6kWh, which belts out 468 km of claimed range within a single charge. Power figures remain different for trims at 177hp and 250Nm in the entry-level VF6 Earth trim, while the higher-spec Wind trim generates 204hp and 310Nm. Additionally, it can charge from 10-70% in just 25 minutes, using a fast charger.
Coming to the Windsor EV, it gets two battery pack options: 38kWh and 52.9 kWh, which belt out 332km and 449 km respectively, in a single charge. Apart from this, power output remains the same at 137hp and 200 Nm for both the packs.
Meanwhile, talking about the charging capabilities, the smaller one supports 45kW fast charging, which takes 45 mins from 20-80%. While the bigger one supports a 60kW fast charging, which takes 50 mins from 20-80%.
Which One To Choose?
If you're someone who wants a traditional SUV design, stronger performance, a larger battery pack and better range figures, the VinFast VF 6 makes a compelling case for itself. It is the more powerful of the two, offers quicker charging capabilities and has the road presence that many SUV buyers look for.
The MG Windsor EV, meanwhile, plays a different game altogether. It focuses on maximising comfort, practicality and value for money. The spacious cabin, reclining Aero Lounge seats, feature-rich interior and the availability of the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model make it a particularly attractive choice for family buyers who want to keep ownership costs under control.
However, if we had to pick one for the average Indian family, the MG Windsor EV edges ahead thanks to its lower entry price, flexible BaaS scheme, spacious cabin and well-rounded feature package. That said, buyers looking for a more premium, performance-oriented electric SUV may find the extra money spent on the VinFast VF 6 worthwhile.
