India registered a record 35,995 electric passenger vehicles in September 2026, up 94% from 18,520 units in September 2025. Tata Motors led with 14,769 units (41.03% share), followed by Mahindra (7,779) and JSW MG Motor (5,242). Electric cars took about 8.3% of all passenger vehicle registrations in the month, according to Nuvama's Vahan analysis reported by Autocar Professional. September was the fourth straight month above 30,000 units, and H1 FY2027 (April to September) closed at 1,90,946 units, up 88% year on year.

Note on the headline number: Different Vahan compilations show slightly different totals for the same month, depending on when the data was downloaded. Autocar India's table (35,995) is the base for this post. Other published compilations put the figure between 35,866 and 35,948, and one outlet reported a lower count from an earlier download. The trend is the same in all of them.
Also, these are Vahan retail registrations, not company wholesale dispatches. The two are different measures and should not be mixed.

Brand-by-Brand Highlights
Tata Motors: a record month at 14,769 units
Tata sold 14,769 EVs, its best month so far and ahead of the earlier record of 14,388 in July. It has now stayed above 12,000 units for four months running. Its share rose to 41.03% from 39.70% a year ago. The Nexon EV remains its biggest volume driver, with the updated Tiago EV and Punch EV also contributing. During the month, Tata extended Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) pricing to the Nexon, Curvv, Sierra and Harrier EVs.
Mahindra: second place, just below its July peak
Mahindra registered 7,779 units, up 96% year on year, but below its record of 8,131 in July. Share edged up to 21.61% from 21.44%. The BE 6 and XEV 9e anchor the line-up, and the three-row XEV 9S widens it. Mahindra also extended BaaS to the XEV 9S and XEV 9e recently.
JSW MG Motor: volume up, share down
MG sold 5,242 units, up 9% year on year and 6% on August. Its share, however, fell to 14.56% from 25.91% a year ago, as the market grew faster than MG did. The Windsor EV is still its highest seller, and the recently launched Hector Tomahawk EV adds another model. MG's best month this year remains June, at 6,220 units.
VinFast: 2,963 units and its best month in India
VinFast held fourth place with 2,963 units, its highest monthly figure since it entered the market, and up 32% on August. The year-on-year jump looks dramatic only because VinFast sold just 6 cars in September 2025. Its H1 FY2027 total stands at 10,826 units, and the line-up is the VF6, VF7 and VF MPV 7.
Kia and Maruti Suzuki swap places
Kia took fifth place with 1,263 units, up 111% year on year and 48% on August's 851, helped by the Syros EV launched in August alongside the Carens Clavis EV. Maruti Suzuki slipped to sixth with 1,103 e Vitara units, down 25% from August's 1,472, though it was still the sixth month in a row with four-digit EV sales. The e Vitara has had limited domestic availability because a larger share of production went to exports, and Maruti is expected to raise domestic output once its new Hansalpur line in Gujarat starts.
BYD, Hyundai and Toyota
BYD sold 836 units (+14%), but its share dropped to 2.32% from 3.95%. Hyundai sold 792 units (+96%), its second-best month of FY2027 after 840 in August, although its H1 FY2027 total of 3,650 is 8% lower than the same period last year. Toyota registered 218 Urban Cruiser Ebella units, its best month for the electric SUV since launch and up 30% on August.
Luxury Electric Car Sales
Luxury EV registrations hit a new monthly high of 975 units, up 60% from 608 a year earlier and above the previous record of 853 in June. Luxury EVs made up 2.70% of all electric passenger vehicles sold in September.
| Brand | Sep 2026 | Sep 2025 | YoY | Share of luxury EVs |
| BMW | 502 | 369 | +36% | 51.48% (60.69% a year ago) |
| Tesla | 291 | 69 | +322% | 29.84% (11.34% a year ago) |
| Mercedes-Benz | 125 | 137 | -9% | 12.82% (22.53% a year ago) |
| Volvo | 45 | 24 | +88% | 4.61% |
| Porsche | 11 | 8 | +38% | 1.12% |
The notable move is Tesla's 291 units, its best month in India, which put it ahead of Mercedes-Benz in the luxury EV ranking for the first time. BMW remains the volume leader, helped by the i5 Long Wheelbase, launched in September at ₹79.6 lakh as its first locally produced electric sedan in India.
Which Models Are Driving the Numbers
A model-wise ranking for September 2026 had not been published in any source we could verify at the time of writing. This section will be updated once Vahan model-level figures are reported. What is confirmed from brand-level reporting:
- Nexon EV is Tata's biggest volume driver, with Tiago EV and Punch EV also contributing.
- Windsor EV is MG's highest-selling model.
- BE 6, XEV 9e and XEV 9S form Mahindra's EV range.
- Urban Cruiser Ebella (218 units) is Toyota's version of the Maruti e Vitara.
For context, the last full model ranking we can point to covers January to June 2026. It comes from secondary compilations of Vahan data, so treat the exact figures as indicative.
| Rank | Model | Jan to Jun 2026 registrations |
| 1 | MG Windsor | 19,080 |
| 2 | Mahindra XEV 9S | 18,074 |
| 3 | Tata Nexon EV | 16,567 |
| 4 | Tata Punch EV | 15,683 |
| 5 | Mahindra XEV 9e | 11,242 |
What This Means If You Are Buying an EV
Registrations at this level tell you the market is deep enough that no single brand sets the terms any more. A few practical points follow from the September data:
- More financing routes. Tata, Mahindra and MG all offer BaaS on selected models, which lowers the upfront price but adds a per-km battery charge. Ask for the exact battery EMI in writing before comparing.
- Availability varies by brand. The Maruti e Vitara has had limited domestic supply, so check delivery timelines before booking.
- Festive demand is building. Janmashtami and Ganesh Chaturthi fell in September, and Navratri, Durga Puja and Diwali still lie ahead. Popular models may see longer waits, so confirm timelines at the dealership.
- Newer entrants are worth shortlisting. VinFast and Kia both posted strong months, which gives buyers more options in the mid-SUV space than a year ago.
Evfy's Take
The headline record is easy to spot. These patterns, drawn from the same Autocar India table, are less obvious. All figures below are Evfy's own arithmetic on published Vahan data, not numbers stated by any company.
1. The top four brands hold about 85% of the market, and everyone else together equals MG. Tata, Mahindra, MG and VinFast account for 30,753 of 35,995 units (about 85.4%). The other 15 brands combined sold 5,242 units, which is exactly MG's September figure. The market is growing fast, but it is still concentrated.
2. VinFast added far more volume than MG did. Compared with a year ago, VinFast added about 2,957 units while MG added about 442. That is roughly 6.7 times the gain. MG's share fell by 11.35 percentage points (25.91% to 14.56%) and VinFast's rise is the main reason.
3. Tata and Mahindra together still hold nearly 63%. Their combined share is about 62.6%. Tata gained 1.33 percentage points year on year, and Mahindra gained 0.17. BYD lost 1.63 points.
4. India now registers about 1,200 electric cars a day. Spread across 30 days, September's total works out to roughly 1,200 a day.
5. The festive quarter has a high bar to clear. Autocar Professional's earlier estimate was 1,35,000 to 1,50,000 units for September to December 2026. With September at about 36,000, that implies roughly 33,000 to 38,000 a month from October to December. That is a projection from a trade publication, not an Evfy forecast, but it gives a clear benchmark for the next three data releases.
