While Toyota has been leaning towards hybridization in Australia, Mahindra has fully committed itself to the EV revolution .With the launch of BE 6 and XEV 9e, designed from the ground up as Mahindra’s first BEVs in India, Mahindra plans on launching at least 3 more soon . With the Freedom NU platform unveiling on 15th August 2025, it is clear that Mahindra has made a commitment towards driving the EV segment in India. It is understood that 2027 is shaping up to be the likely introduction of Mahindra EVs in Australia too.Sachin Arolkar, the head of international operations at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, remarked, “In terms of timing it [the arrival of EVs in Australia] is not too far away.”Australia, like India, is a right-hand drive market which has helped the company get on top of the export with the Mahindra BEVs.In fact, Mahindra has declared Australia as a priority in export markets overall as it seeks to take a piece of the local market for itself.Mahindra currently averages at 4,000 unit sales per year , placing it around 30th rank . The target is to become a top 15 seller in the Aussie market by 2030 .Along with BEVs, Mahindra will launch ICE pickup and SUVs to drive popularity in Australia.Arolkar added that Australia’s new NVES CO2 reduction scheme was intrinsic to the company’s commitment to EVs. Under the program, EVs earn credits that can be used to reduce Mahindra ICE car fines. For the same reason, they can also be sold to other automakers.According to Arolkar, Mahindra might start its Australian EV roll-out in a number of ways, which could affect the launch date.In India, Mahindra chose to introduce two cars simultaneously, one from each of the BE (Born Electric) and XEV (an electric sub-brand based on the well-known XUV SUV line) lines. While XEV versions are more conventional and BE variants are sportier, both feature the same INGLO BEV-specific architecture , which was created by Mahindra, and differ in certain ways in their powertrain systems, which are obtained from Volkswagen, French supplier Valeo, and BYD.The first two of five 2022 INGLO BEV ideas to go into production are the BE 6 and XEV 9e. According to reports, two more, the XUV.e8 and XEV 7e, will be released soon. There are also rumors that a sixth model, the BE Rall E, an off-road variant of the BE 6, is being developed.
