Tesla have finally entered the Indian market last year, but its bigger Make-in-India dream seems to be on hold. While the brand has launched its cars in India via imports, reports now suggest that Tesla has abandoned plans to set up a local manufacturing facility in the country. This raises an important question: will Tesla remain a niche premium EV brand in India, or is a local factory still possible in the future? Let’s take a closer look.

Tesla Scraps India Manufacturing Plans

Tesla has been launched in India after a long wait through the import route. Although the brand got a ton of relaxation, the car remains a premium EV for the Indian audience. Earlier, there were plans to set up a manufacturing facility in India, but a recent announcement cleared the buzz. The report comes after a year of discussions between Tesla and the Indian government over local production, import duties and investment commitments.

One of the biggest reasons for Tesla's decision is that the existing supply chain and industrial base don't seem to be ready for the brand's manufacturing unit. Moreover, there's a lot of uncertainty about policy decisions, along with limited sales potential in the Indian market. It is pretty evident from Tesla's sales chart that it stood as a premium EV. From July 2025, when the brand started its operations in the country, to April 2026, the brand has sold almost 383 units till now.

With local manufacturing reportedly off the table for now, Tesla is expected to rely on fully imported models for its India operations. This means cars could continue to arrive as completely built units, making them more expensive than locally assembled or locally manufactured EVs. As a result, Tesla’s India presence may remain limited to a niche premium buyer base rather than becoming a mass-market EV player.

This update may come as a disappointment for Indian EV buyers who were eying Tesla as a more affordable option in the near future. It is now unlikely to be priced similarly to the mainstream EVs in India.
