VinFast has filed a design patent in India for the VF5 facelift, according to reports. The filing shows repositioned headlights, a new bonnet, fresh bumpers and redesigned connected LED tail-lights, and it matches an uncamouflaged facelift spied in Vietnam in September 2026. The patent covers exterior design only. It does not reveal the India-spec battery, range or features, and VinFast has not confirmed an India launch. If the VF5 does arrive, it is expected to be priced at around ₹12 lakh (ex-showroom).

What the Patent Shows

The filing gives us our first look at how VinFast plans to refresh its smallest SUV-styled hatchback. At the front, the headlights look sleeker and sit lower than on the current global-spec VF5. The thick black section under the lamps has become slimmer and now merges into the blacked-out lower bumper, which gives the nose a sharper, more modern look.

Up top, the patent shows a new bonnet, and the bumpers look fresh. In profile, most elements look identical to today's car, but the wheels appear redesigned. Spy shots from Vietnam suggest the wheel size stays at 16 inches.

At the rear, the facelift gets chunkier connected LED tail-lights. The reverse light and turn indicators, which currently sit on the bumper, move inside the tail-light units. Spy shots also show VinFast lettering at the centre of the tailgate and the VF5 badge at the right corner.

Source note: the patent is the confirmed base for the exterior changes. Tailgate lettering and wheel size come from spy shots, not the patent.

Interior and Tech: What Spy Shots Suggest

The patent does not show the cabin, so everything in this section comes from spy shots of the facelift in Vietnam, not from VinFast. Treat it as indicative.

  • Larger free-standing infotainment touchscreen on a more upright dashboard
  • No dedicated driver's display. The central screen appears to handle the instrumentation as well
  • New two-spoke steering wheel with a flattened top and bottom
  • More creased centre console, with a rotary drive selector dial and two cup holders
  • Leatherette seat upholstery on the spied car, an apparent step up from fabric

The missing driver's display is the biggest change on paper. The current global-spec VF5 is listed with an 8-inch touchscreen and a separate 7-inch digital cluster, so the facelift appears to consolidate everything into one larger screen. VinFast has not published screen sizes for the facelift.

What the Patent Does Not Reveal

Here is where the "tech updates" in this story stop. A design patent protects how a car looks. It says nothing about what sits underneath. As of 29 October 2026, the following are not confirmed:

  • Battery pack and range for the India-spec car
  • Motor output and charging speeds
  • Feature list, safety kit and ADAS
  • Whether India gets the facelift design or the current design at launch
  • Launch date, variants and final pricing
  • Local assembly plans for the VF5

Reports also suggest the India-spec VF5 test mule spied in August 2026 already carried revised headlamps and a completely different interior layout compared with the global-spec car. Whether that mule is the facelift is not confirmed, so we are not treating it as proof.

Global-Spec VF5 Tech Recap

Since the facelift's powertrain is unannounced, here is what the current VF5 offers in other markets. This is the baseline any India-spec car would likely be measured against.

Spec29.6 kWh (Indonesia)37.23 kWh (other markets)
Motor outputAround 90hp (some sources list 95hp)136hp
Torque135 Nm135 Nm
Claimed range (NEDC)268 km326 km

Height1,578 to 1,579 mm
Wheelbase2,514 mm

NEDC ranges are claimed figures. Real-world range on Indian roads will be lower, and India-spec figures would be certified under local test norms.

How the VF5 Story Has Unfolded in India

WhenWhat happened
January 2026VinFast reported to be considering the VF5 for India
14 August 2026India-spec VF5 test mule spied with revised headlamps and a different interior
September 2026Uncamouflaged VF5 facelift spied in Vietnam

VinFast has been filing design patents in India at a steady pace. The brand's second-generation VF8 was patented here earlier this year, and reports say patents have also been filed for facelifted versions of the VF6 and VF9.

Expected Price and Rivals

The India-spec VF5 is expected to be priced at around ₹12 lakh (ex-showroom). This is an expectation from reports, not a VinFast announcement. Depending on the battery and spec VinFast brings, the VF5 could face these rivals.

ModelPrice (ex-showroom)
VinFast VF5 (expected)Around ₹12 lakh
Tata Punch EV₹9.79 lakh to ₹12.99 lakh
Tata Nexon EV₹12.49 lakh to ₹17.69 lakh
Mahindra XUV 3XO EV₹13.89 lakh to ₹14.96 lakh

The VF5 is also expected to be offered to both private and fleet buyers, similar to the VF MPV 7.

Should You Wait for the VF5 Facelift?

Our advice depends on your timeline.

Wait if: you are not buying before early 2027, you like the small-SUV format, and you want to see India-spec range and pricing before deciding. The facelift's design is likely the version VinFast would show here, if it launches at all.

Do not wait if: you need a car in the next few months. There is no confirmed launch date, no booking window and no India pricing. A patent filing is not a delivery schedule.

Practical tip: if you are shortlisting, use the Punch EV's price band as your benchmark. If VinFast launches the VF5 above ₹12 lakh, it will have to justify the premium with range or features, not just looks.

Evfy's Take

Three data points now line up: an India test mule in August, an uncamouflaged facelift in Vietnam in September, and a patent in October. That is a pattern worth noticing, but it is still a weaker launch signal than ARAI or BIS certification filings. Design patents are cheap, and companies file them for cars that never reach showrooms.

The more interesting question is the cabin. If the facelift really drops the separate driver's display, the VF5 would follow the single-screen approach already used on VinFast's larger cars, where the India-spec VF6 relies on a heads-up display instead of a cluster. Whether Indian buyers in the ₹12 lakh band accept a screen-only layout is something VinFast will have to test, because small-car buyers here tend to value a clear, always-visible speedometer.

The bigger gap is the one the patent cannot fill: the battery. A 37.23 kWh pack with a 326 km NEDC claim makes the VF5 a serious Punch EV rival. A 29.6 kWh pack makes it a city car. Until VinFast says which one India gets, the design is the least important part of this story.
