India's electric vehicle retail sales touched an all-time August high of 2,98,448 units in August 2026, up 52.9% year-on-year, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). Overall EV penetration rose to 12.3%, from 9.5% a year earlier. Every one of the four EV categories, two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles, set a fresh August record, even as total EV sales dipped about 9% from July's own record month. Here's the full segment and brand-wise breakdown.

What the FADA August 2026 Data Shows

FADA President Sai Giridhar called August 2026 the biggest-ever August for electric mobility in India, with EV retail across every category rising to a fresh high despite an overall auto market that stayed below last year's festive peaks. Here's the headline picture:

MetricAugust 2026August 2025Change
Total EV retail (all segments)2,98,448 units1,95,250 units+52.9% YoY
Overall EV penetration12.3%9.5%+2.8 percentage points
Month-on-month changeDown from 3,27,901 units in JulyN/A-9% MoM

The month-on-month dip isn't a red flag. July itself was a record month, and August traditionally sits in a lull between the monsoon season and the festive rush that builds through Navratri, Dhanteras and Diwali. Giridhar described the broader pattern as electric mobility "consolidating at a new plateau" rather than losing momentum.

Segment-by-Segment Breakdown

Each of India's four EV categories, two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles, notched its own all-time August high. Growth rates and penetration levels, however, varied sharply by segment.

Electric Two-Wheelers: TVS Leads, Ola Slips Further

Electric two-wheeler retail crossed 1.83 lakh units, growing 67% year-on-year even as it eased from July's higher base. The brand leaderboard tells its own story:

RankBrandAugust 2026 Units
1TVS Motor Company48,938
2Bajaj Auto41,114
3Ather Energy28,757
4Ola Electric13,852 (down around 29% YoY)

Ola Electric's decline stands out against an otherwise booming segment. It's part of a pattern that's been building for months: Ola led India's e2W market as recently as FY2025, but has been steadily losing ground to TVS, Bajaj and Ather through FY2026.

Electric Three-Wheelers: Already Structurally Electric

At 65.3% penetration, electric three-wheelers remain the most electrified vehicle category in India by a wide margin, and that share is still climbing from 56.6% a year ago. Retail volumes grew 25.28% YoY to 79,846 units, though the segment also cooled slightly from July.

Electric Passenger Vehicles: Tata Extends Its Lead

Electric car retail rose 51.89% YoY to 30,696 units, with EV penetration in the passenger vehicle market improving to 7.6% from 5.8% a year earlier.

2Mahindra & Mahindra6,464
3JSW MG Motor India4,622
4VinFast Auto India2,199
5Tesla India Motors and Energy116

VinFast's climb to fourth place is worth watching given how new the brand is to the Indian market. Tesla India, by contrast, is still retailing in the low hundreds, a reminder that its India rollout remains an early, low-volume operation.

Electric Commercial Vehicles: The Standout Category

With retail nearly tripling year-on-year to 4,702 units, electric CVs were the fastest-growing EV segment in August, and the only one to grow month-on-month as well. Their share of overall CV retail jumped to 5.18%, from 2.06% a year ago. FADA flagged this as a sign that fleet electrification is moving from pilots to purchase orders, particularly in last-mile delivery and logistics.

FY2026-27 Year-to-Date: The Bigger Picture

Zooming out from the single month, the first five months of FY2026-27 (April to August) show sustained, structural growth rather than a one-off spike. According to Vahan retail data compiled by Nuvama Institutional Equities:

SegmentFY2026-27 YTD (Apr-Aug)YoY Growth
Electric Passenger Vehicles1,53,403 units+85%
Electric Two-Wheelers9,03,420 units (crossed 9 lakh)+70%

Both figures point in the same direction as the FADA August numbers: this isn't a single strong month, it's a multi-month acceleration across the two largest EV categories.

Should You Buy Now, or Wait for the Festive Season?

If you're actively shopping for an electric car, the timing question is worth a closer look. FADA's data shows passenger vehicle dealer inventory rose to 38 to 40 days in August, well above the federation's recommended 21-day benchmark, with the majority of PV dealers reporting higher stock month-on-month.

That extra inventory can work in a buyer's favour right now: dealers carrying excess stock are typically more willing to negotiate on price, accessories or financing terms, especially on electric passenger vehicles where volumes are still comparatively small.

At the same time, India's festive season, running from Ganesh Chaturthi through Navratri to Dhanteras and Diwali in November, is when most OEMs roll out their biggest schemes, cashback offers and finance deals. FADA's own outlook for the September to November period is "optimistic," with over 80% of dealers expecting growth.

In short: if you find a model and variant you want today, current dealer inventory levels give you real negotiating room. If you can wait a few weeks, festive-season offers have historically been stronger on both two-wheelers and cars.

Evfy's Take

The 2.98 lakh headline number is genuinely impressive, but the more useful story sits a layer beneath it.

Start with two-wheelers. Ola Electric's 13,852 units in August, down close to 29% year-on-year, isn't a one-month blip. It follows a FY2026 in which Ola's full-year e2W sales fell more than 52%, dropping it from segment leader to fourth place behind TVS, Bajaj and Ather. The story of India's e2W boom right now isn't really about which brand got there first. It's about which brands built the distribution, service network and product breadth to hold share once the category went mainstream.

Then there's electric commercial vehicles, the smallest segment by volume but the fastest-growing by far at 188% YoY. Nobody's writing headlines about 4,702 units, but that number matters more than its size suggests. Fleet operators don't switch to EVs on sentiment. They switch when the total cost of running a vehicle actually pencils out, which suggests the economics of electric last-mile delivery and logistics are starting to work in India, not just in pilot programmes.

It's also worth reading FADA's own caution alongside the celebration. The federation itself has pointed out that a chunk of this year's YoY strength rests on a soft August 2025 base, when buyers had deferred purchases ahead of the GST 2.0 rate cut. That doesn't make August 2026's numbers any less real, but it does mean the year-on-year percentages look a bit more dramatic than the underlying month-on-month trend does. FADA has said as much itself: the real test isn't this month's comparison to last year, it's how showroom conversion holds up through the festive season from September to November.
