VinFast has registered 12,877 vehicles in India between January and September 2026, according to the company's latest update, with September alone making up roughly a quarter of that total. The Vietnamese brand ranked fourth among EV brands in September, and its Asia CEO Tapan Ghosh says it has already reached its year-end target of 75 dealerships. Alongside the numbers, VinFast is pushing ownership perks (free charging until March 2029, complimentary maintenance and residual value guarantees) and is moving into electric two-wheelers and ride-hailing.

The numbers: registrations and September rank

The headline figure is 12,877 registrations in the first nine months of 2026. VinFast says this is based on government registration data, and that September contributed about a quarter of the total, which points to a sharp acceleration through the year.

As a rough check, an independent Vahan-based roundup of September passenger vehicle registrations puts VinFast at 2,964 units in the month, up from 2,239 in August. That works out to about 23% of 12,877, so "roughly a quarter" is a fair description, though not an exact match.

VinFast also says it ranked fourth among EV brands in September. It did not name the brands ahead of it in this update, so we have not listed them here.

Dealership network: 75 claimed, 60 confirmed

According to Tapan Ghosh, VinFast has already achieved its year-end target of 75 dealerships. This is the figure to treat with care.

The last network milestone we could confirm independently was the 60th dealership, a 3S outlet in Patna, opened on 6 August 2026. The 50th came in Bengaluru's Electronic City in March 2026. Between 6 August and now, that would mean roughly 15 more outlets in under three months. It is possible, but VinFast has not published a city-wise list of the new ones.

Ownership perks: charging, maintenance, residual value

VinFast is leaning on three ownership programmes to address the usual worries of first-time EV buyers.

ProgrammeWhat VinFast says it offers
Free public chargingComplimentary charging at eligible V-Green partner stations until March 2029
Scheduled maintenanceComplimentary service and routine maintenance packages
Residual value guaranteeResale protection over the ownership period

What is not yet public is the fine print: which VinFast models and variants qualify, how many V-Green stations are live and where, any per-session or per-kWh caps on the free charging, and the exact guaranteed resale percentages and tenures. We will update this section if VinFast publishes those terms.

Beyond cars: e-motorcycles and Green SM

Electric two-wheelers. In October 2026, VinFast signed letters of intent with more than 50 dealer partners for locally produced electric scooters and motorcycles. A letter of intent is a first step, not a final dealership contract. VinFast has not announced launch dates, models, prices or battery specs for its Indian two-wheeler range.

Ride-hailing. Green SM, described as VinFast's strategic mobility partner, has launched its all-electric ride-hailing service in New Delhi. Fleet size and the vehicle models in use were not disclosed in this update.

Why India matters to VinFast

In an interview published on 28 October, Ghosh said that success in India gives VinFast confidence it can replicate the Vietnam and India success stories elsewhere. In other words, India is being positioned as a proving ground for VinFast's wider expansion, not just a sales destination. Reports on the same interview add that VinFast wants India to become one of its two largest markets alongside Vietnam.

The company has also been clear on why it believes the timing works: electric cars made up about 8.5% of total passenger car retail sales in September 2026, per industry data cited by VinFast, with monthly EV registrations nearly double the previous year.

Evfy's Take

The registration momentum is real, but the more interesting signal is how VinFast is building around the car. Free charging, maintenance and a buyback-style guarantee target the three things that most often hold back a first-time EV buyer: running cost, service worry and resale doubt.

The test now is transparency. A free-charging promise through March 2029 is only as good as the number of V-Green stations near you, and a residual value guarantee is only as good as its published percentages. Until VinFast shares those, buyers should ask the dealer for the terms in writing.

On the 75-dealership claim, we would like to see the outlet list. A jump from 60 to 75 in under three months is plausible given the pace so far (roughly one new outlet every six days since July 2025), but it is a CEO statement for now.
